I went to the Mewniversity!

BHU:  Oh, hai!  Guess what!  Mai mom and poppy took me to the Mewniversity of Misery Vetz Klinik Thursday and they were very mean to me but there were some purrity girls there so it was okay.  The only thing is, I gotta go back to get mai teeth cleaned.  This quilt feels nice and snuggly so I'm gonna take a nap now.  Mai mom will tell you the resta the story.

PATTY:  I'm not sure about the "mean" part; that might be a little dramatic, Bhu.  Anyhoo, Sab & I have been really worried for many years now that Bhu was not getting a complete exam when we took him to the vet every year for his shots.  He is just so aggressively uncooperative that most vets have been afraid to touch him and, since he is a "senior" kitteh, no one wanted to sedate him for fear of dire results.  So we took him to the University's vet clinic where they have worked on some of the most exotic animals in the world and where they have Board Certified anesthesiologists.  A bit of an upgrade from the neighborhood vet.

Bhu was sedated and examined thoroughly!  For a 15 year old, he is in very good shape except for his teeth.  Even his kidney values have improved (despite the fact that he refuses to eat the special food and continues to eat Liver & Chicken Feast)!

He's going to have to have a cleaning "including radiographs" and probably several extractions.  Have any of your kittehs had this done?  Do you know any kittehs who have had this?  He's taking antibiotics (which he actually LIKES, btw) and he is much happier already.

We would love to hear from you about what you know about these procedures!  xxoo Patty

I don't know about the radiograph, but both Nicki and Derry have had multiple extractions, and both when they were 3 years old. Nicki had 8 teeth removed in November 2009 and Derry had 9 teeth removed in June 2010. Both had shots of the antibiotic Convenia before I knew anything about Convenia, now it's in their file to NEVER be given to them. But that's a personal choice.

Both boys were uncomfortable for a few days, Derry had pain meds, though I don't recall that Nicki did, not at home (just at the vet clinic).

And both boys have done fine. Nicki still has his back chewing teeth/molars, but Derry has only one left, on the top I believe. He still can manage his paltry 2 TBSP of kibble a day and manage the treats, but of course for the first week or ten days after the dental surgery, neither was allowed to have dry food.

Fingers (and paws) crossed that Bhu does just fine. My boys were young, so recovery might have been faster for them.

WE have never had our teeth cleaned. Wizard was suppose to but he got too sick and the vet was worried about long sedation.

Our Angel Tamir had a few extractions and they didn't bother him at all. We'll send purrs for Bhu that his dental goes easily too.

We hope Bhu does fine and doesn't lose too many toofies. The girls are sending purrs :)

We hope everything goes well with the dental procedures Uncle Bhu!

Mom Paula: I was very lucky with Sweet Praline. She had a few teeth cleanings, but her teeth were always in great shape with no extractions. I hope everything goes well with Bhu.

Glad you are doing so well, Bhu. Hope the teeth cleaning goes smoothly.

The Dad speaking here. It depends a lot who does the surgery -- and for all practical purposes, it is surgery. Most of the time there is no problem, and the kitties feel better after losing the painful teeth. The University should have qualified people doing the work, so things should be fine.

Kitties live well with no teeth at all, so Bhu should handle a few extractions with no trouble.

Several of my kids had to have extractions... Mouse's mouth was so inflamed that all her teeth had to be removed.

They all healed at a different pace. Yet everyone did fine. And Mousey ate crunchies without teeth!

Glad Bhu will get antibiotics... The Mewniversity Vet clinic sounds very qualified and professional.

My Sandy Red Tigger was not given antibiotics by the vet who extracted one of his teeth. I asked why not, and got a pat answer about using a "sterile field" from the technician.

So when an infection set in, I took him to a different vet to be taken care of and never took Sandy back to the other vet. Even a human dentist hands out antibiotics for extractions - "sterile field" or not!

Granted our kitties and doggies usually have better immune systems, but Sandy had a compromised immune system due to asthma... so that should have been taken into consideration.
